The annual discount is 20%, and the full year is charged upfront. Extra GPU time costs $4 per hour on every plan. There is no free trial on any tier.
What is Fast GPU time, and why does it matter?
Midjourney doesn’t sell you a number of images. It sells you processing time, which is a genuinely different thing to budget for.
Fast mode renders immediately and draws down your monthly GPU hours. Relax mode queues your job behind others and costs nothing, so it’s effectively unlimited generation if you can wait.
The distinction decides which plan you need, and here’s the part that trips people up: Basic has no Relax mode at all. When your 3.3 hours are gone, you either stop generating until next month or buy GPU time at $4 an hour. Standard at $30 is the first plan where you can keep working indefinitely, which makes the real jump from casual to regular use $30 rather than $10.
One small mercy: every plan lets you earn free GPU time by rating images.
Your images are public unless you pay for Pro
This is the fact we’d most want to know before subscribing, and it’s rarely mentioned in reviews.
Stealth Mode, which keeps your generations private, is only available on the Pro ($60/mo) and Mega ($120/mo) plans. On Basic and Standard, what you create is visible to other users by default.
For hobby art that’s fine, and arguably part of the appeal. For an unannounced product, client work under NDA, or anything you’d rather competitors didn’t see, the entry price isn’t $10. It’s $60.
The $1 million revenue rule
Midjourney’s Terms of Service grant broad commercial usage rights on any paid plan, with one condition worth reading carefully: a company making more than $1,000,000 USD in gross revenue per year must be on the Pro or Mega plan.
If you’re a freelancer or small studio, this doesn’t affect you. If you’re generating images inside a larger business, a $10 Basic seat isn’t compliant regardless of how little you use it.
Who should skip Midjourney?
Skip it if you want to try before paying. There’s no free tier and no trial. Rivals let you test at no cost, and for casual use that alone settles it.
Skip it if your work must stay private and $60/mo is too much. Privacy is a paid feature here, not a default.
Skip it if you need text inside images or literal accuracy. Midjourney optimises for beauty. Other models handle legible text and precise briefs better.
Skip it if you want an API. Midjourney has never offered official API access, so it can’t be wired into an automated pipeline.
